Default I need some ignorant help

    I always tell my students...

The difference between ignorance and stupid is.... Ignorance is without knowledge. Stupid is having the knowledge, but not using it.

I am ignorant as to what type of tree I have in my yard.

I had a limb that fell on the side of my house in Feb. I was hauling it to the side of the road today when I wondered if I could use it for BBQ. Can anyone identify this by the bark?

    Thanks in advance

Do you have a picture of the rest of the tree? A close-up of the leaves and a description (height, width, fruits/nuts/pods) would be helpful too.

You called? I'm ignorant and I'm here to help! The bark looks pretty smooth, (and I am guessing) so maybe a maple? Like Paul says, any leaves on rest of the tree?

My guess is that it is a water oak. Which is in the white oak family.

From the pics I just saw online, I think you're right. In the morning I'll see if I can get a leaf off of it and do a positive identify.

    Thanks!

I too am ignorant to the tree; however, scientific method would tell me to cut some and try it (BBQ some cheap meat). Like it? Use it. :-)

The tree branch has been sitting on the ground for some time. This means it could have soaked in more than just water (dog pee, run off water with pesticide and fertilizer, etc.).

I am a "Do first, apologize later" guy ...:-) May the force be with you.

Does the pig have a spot for "What is good wood for BBQ?"? It would be a nice add for the site. :-).
