One tradition we picked up from The Bushwhackers was to pass around a communal drink known as "The Bucket". We simply stole their idea and renamed it "The Pig Trough" since our bucket is an old pail with the words "Pig Trough" painted on the outside. We're often asked about the recipe and field many requests for a hit of the trough at the events we participate in.

Below is the secret as given to us by The Bushwhackers. The really super secret is that after 3 or troughs have been mixed and served, no one really cares what it tastes like any more.

Ingredients List
  • powdered sugar,
  • lots of fresh mint,
  • o.j. concentrate (several small cans),
  • limeade concentrate (several small cans),
  • lemonade concentrate (several small cans),
  • bourbon,
  • rum,
  • vodka,
  • gin (if you like it),
  • lots of ice

Empty, clean and take the label off of a #10 can of something. Put in a copious amount of mint, some sugar, o.j., limeade, lemonade (1 can each) and muddle with a wooden spoon. Then fill can w/ice and the proportions of liquor you think is appropriate and stir from bottom up, blending all ingredients until the can is frosty. Pass and replenish with ice and liquor, stir and pass again.

One must continue the replenish procedure after every pass--with tasting, until the appropriate mix is achieved; than continue after every pass-around, adding sugar, mint, additional concentrate from time-to-time to maintain appropriate taste. Usually the replenishment will consist only of liquor and ice, however. Care should be taken not to allow it to become diluted or warm. If you do, you'll have to throw it out and start over.
