    What is a backyard contest? I hear the term thrown around all the time, but it's not used up here.

    If you look very carefully you can see the drums in the background (see below). This was the first time we had used the drums in a contest.

    Backyard contests are usually 1 day events with short cook entries (chicken, ribs, sausage, etc.). They usually have a smaller entry fee (this particular contest was free) and are a good venue for backyard cooks to start competing. A lot of the bigger contests in this area run a backyard contest on Saturday along side the KCBS sanctioned event. This particular event was a little different in that Carolyn Wells invited us and all of those other great teams. It was more of a marketing event for JD.
