We competed in the Raytown, MO contest this weekend. We've done this contest for the last 7 years. The close proximity, grass field, and late spring weather usually means we get a crowd of our friends out for a great Friday night party. This year was no exception although they did move the contest to a much smaller and hilly grass field.
In addition to seeing our non-bbq friends, we really enjoyed hanging out with and talking to our bbq family. We ended up right next to LowLife and it was good to meet a fellow forum member.
Since we knew we were going to be a little shorthanded, we recruited Bob from Boondoggle BBQ to help us out. He was very instrumental in keeping us on track. We remain really grateful for the assistance. There were 6 categories in the contest and neither Jon or I had the stamina to complete those entries. Bob is an experienced competitor and offered simple and logical solutions to problems we encountered. We learned quite a few things from him during the contest.
We tried out a few new recipes and techniques this weekend. As you can see below, most of them somehow worked. The Pickled Pig won our first GC and got calls in chicken (6th place), ribs (1st place), brisket (1st place), and miscellaneous (4th place). There were 60 teams. As you might imagine, we are very excited about the results. It was our first win and it means a lot to us.
Another forum member, Scott from Wild Blue, won Reserve Grand. Congrats Scott!
